CHAMPION PLOUGHING MATCH

successfully carries - out. President, Mr Coiin Gray: Vice-presi-dent, Mr James Drain; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr John L. Gilkison; Committee, Messrs W. Bail'd. Thos. Mclntosh, J. Fleming, AV. Kerse, R. AA’. Mitchell, E. Tobin, T. Fraser. J. AlcCrostle. J. Tobin. J. Lindsay, AA T . Ronald. J. Kilkelly, T. Kilkelly, AV. Fraser, G. Y'oung, Colin Gray jnr., James Drain, P. McDermid, J.. Stephenson, Colin Gray, A. Drysdale, AV. A. Gray, AA'. Blakie, and J. Brown. The Southland Champion Ploughing Match Association was not favoured ■with ideal weather yesterday when another fixture was added to the list of past events. The morning was cold and showery, hut in tiie afternoon there •was an improvement and conditions were not quite so .unpleasant. The convincing ground was a paddock on Air Thomas Fraser’s farm at AVaianiwa, and owing to various causes it hardly compared with the ground chosen in previous years. This year the grub has made a material difference, and to make matters'worse there were numerous dips, pools of water, and timber in places to be contended against. Notwithstanding these drawbacks the work performed was consistently good, and competent judges maintained that taken all round the display would be difficult to surpass. A pleasing feature was the number of young ploughmen who took part In the competitions, a fact which augurs well for future years. The judges had a great deal of difficulty in arriving at a decision in the Champion Class, and it was nearly six o’clock before their decision was proclaimed. The announcement that David Hardy had secured the coveted honour was received enthusiastically, more so, perhaps, on account of the fact that the winner used a plough of Southland manufacture, Air Trapski, of AVyr.dham. being the maker. It is worthy of note that entries this year showed a substantial increase over last, and that the attendance yesterday, despite the unpropitious weather, was very large, visitors being present from almost every part of Southland. The exhibition of draught horses was something to enthuse over, and it is questionable if a better all-round lot has ever taken part in a Southland ploughing match. This Is all the more Interesting to note in view of the opinions that have been expressed from time to time regarding the danger of exporting draught horses to the Commonwealth on the scale that has been noted for some time past. But yesterday’s display shows that the district is not by any means played out. The fourhorse team of Air AA'm. Ronald’s, and Messrs AA'm. Gray and Son’s three-horse team, including Champion Nellie Gray, commanded particular attention, and there were others which were very close up. Most of the teams were nicely turned out, several of them wearing the decorative Scotch collar, and having their manes and tails plentifully bedecked with many-coloured ribbons. The harness, too, was spick and span, and not what one generally associates With harness in everyday use. Few realise the trouble that is gone to by owners and ploughmen in order to make an attractive showing of their horses and implements, and when all is said and done it requires a great deal of enthusiasm to cause so much time and trouble to be taken in turning out teams as was the case yesterday. The officials had everything in good trim, and matters went smoothly and well, and in this connection Air John Gilkison, who was making his debut as secretary, is deserving of a special word of praise. Prompt, efficient, and invariably patient and courteous. Air Gilkison ably filled the part which for so many years was identified with the name of the late' Air J. A. Alitchell. Alessrs James Fleming. AI. Gray, and D. AlcFarlane (Kamahi) judged the ploughing, and Alessrs James Drain (Spar Bush) and A. Drysdale the horses and specials. During the afternoon a high-jumping competition was he’-cl in an adjacent paddock, and this was won by Air R. Ralton’s Czarina, ridden by T. Kirkwood, Air Travis’s Ranfurly, ridden by owner, being second. The following list of champions may prove of interest; — Tear. AA’inner.
