DUNEDIN'S AMBITION

AIMING- AT 100,000. (Special to the Times.) DUNEDIN, July 12. A movement is now on foot in Dunedin which has for its object the formation of an organisation having for its aim the Industrial development and expansion of the City of Dunedin by the creation of a spirit of civic enthusiasm and the extensive use of resultful methods of widespread publicity. The definite aim of the proposed league Is to bring the population of the City of Dunedin up to 100,000. The movement has been brought under the notice of the Mayor, who has given assurance of his entire sympathy with it, and in about a fortnight’s time a public meeting of citizens will be called to consider the proposal. In the meantime some two hundred principal citizens and business people are being circularised with a view to bringing the movement under their direct notice. In the course of the circular it is set out that the league, which is to be called “The 100,000 League of Dunedin,” is to be an organised movement of the citizens of Dunedin, who by co-operation in spheres of development, expansion, and publicity, shall be determined to assert the position of Dunedin as the chief manufacturing city and educational centre of the Dominion. The means to be adopted for the development and expansion of the city will be in the direction of making overtures to manufacturers to open new industries, to provide information as to factory sites, and to assist in providing a sufficient supply of labour to establish the city as headquarters for oversea tourists in relation to the Cold Lakes, the Fiords, Mount Cook, etc.; to agitate for irrigation in Central Otago as a means of enriching the city, and in all other such ways as may suggest themselves; and finally by the adoption of the most advanced methods of scientific publicity, as successfully carried out by cities, states and municipalities in other parts of the world; and by all approved forms of frulthful activity, adding to the population, advancing its interests, and increasing the prosperity of the City cf Dunedin. It is suggested that £2OOO per annum be raised by annual vote by the City Council, annual contributions by all societies represented, and annual contributions by public companies, business firms, private individuals, and the public generally.
