BAND OF HOPE UNION

The first annual meeting of the Southland Band of Hope Union was held in the First Church on Tuesday night, Mr J. Crosby Smith presiding over a large number of delegate?. Apologies for absence were received from the Revs. W. Grigg and James Baird, Mrs Baird, and Messrs DV. D. Hunt, H. V. Wells, and Jno. Fisher (Otautau). The annual report stated that good work had been done during the year, anti the balance - sheet showed a satisfactory credit balance. Dir J. S. Baxter, in moving the adoption of those documents, .said that Mr J. D. McGruer had donated £2O to the funds, to be used for prizes. The motion was carried. It was decided to inaugurate a Band of Hope at Winton, and the Secretary was instructed with making preliminary arrangements for a visit from Mrs W. Grigg and Dlrs H. L. Cowie with that object in view. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President. Mr J. Crosby Smith; vice - presidents, Messrs J. J. DVcsney, J. S. Baxter, W. A. McCaw and Mrs James Walker (Bluff); secretary, Dir A. Dewe; treasurer, Miss Ayling; assistant secretary, Rev. R. Dlorgan. Votes of thanks wore accorded Dlrs James Walker (Bluff) and Mr John MacGibbon (Gore) for their attendance at the meeting. An adjournment was then made to the Social Hall. when refreshments were provided, and a short programme of musical and other items was rendered. Those who contributed songs were Misses Matr and Lilico and Dir J. Crosby Smith, while recitations were given by Dlessrs K. Morgan, A. Wallace, C. C. Cook, G. D. Mclndoe, Rev. Hales and Dliss Roff. Short addresses were delivered by Messrs J. Crosby Smith, J. S. Baxter, G. D. Mclndoe, John MacGibbon (Gore), and the Rev. F. Hales. The singing of the Doxology and the pronouncing of the benediction, concluded a most enjoyable meeting.
