Bidding was brisk throughout, end we cleared the bulk of our catalogue, as under: — Oats. —There is very little change to report. Shippers are buyers, but farmers’ ideas of value are a little in excess of what they can give, so that the business passing is not large for this time of the year. Prime Sutherlands dun and black oats are. enquired for. We quote: Prime milling. 3s 3d to 3s 3fid: good to best feed, 3s l%d to 3s 2d; inferior to medium, 2s lid to 3s per bushel; bags extra. ■Wheat. —During the week reports from Australia hardened the market a little, but since then cables from London describe the market as Inactive, so t.. at millers holding fairly large stocks are not keen buyers. Oats and chaff arc still firm, and the former is scarce. The continued dry weather is likely to have a firming effect upon the market. Potatoes for immediate delivery arc easier, .and there is practically no forward business doing. The news that a grub has appeared in the Oamaru district is causing some anxiety lest it should prove to be the Australian potato flyThe retail price of butter has advanced Id Bur lb all round. BEEF AND MUTT OH. SHORTAGE IX AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, March 21. In Auckland, as elsewhere, there seems to be an Indication of coming shortage In beef and mutton supplies. On inquiries being made to-day it was ascertained that for freezing purposes the prospects are that this season's output will fall short of last year’s by a considerable margin, owing no doubt to the fact that last season the beef market was overstocked. There has, in many districts, been a wholesale slaughter of young calves. The dry weather In Auckland during the summer is also considered to have had same effect on the mutton trade, and supplies for freezing purposes are beginning to shorten. The fact that so much new land is being settled in the Auckland province also accounts to a certain extent for the absorption of a large number of sheep which might have otherwise been frozen /or export.
