MATAURA NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The assessors appointed by the Freezing Works and Paper Mills Companies— Mr Hay, of Dunedin, on behalf of the Paper Mills, and .Mr Blaikey, of Gore, on behalf of the Freezing Works—met yesterday at the falls to lake measurements for the purpose of apportioning the water to each side of the river. The continued drought has made both companies short of power; the Paper Mi 11s working only half time, and the Freezing Company having to send a proportion of sheep to the Bluff to be frozen. At present there are indications of rain. Clouds have gathered aii round; a soft, quiet rain has set in, and fervent hopes are being entertained that it will continue. For some time past Lay services have been held at St. Saviour’s Church in the absence of the Vicar; but on Sunday and afterwards regular services will be held, a curate (the Rev. Thos. Moor Campbell) having been appointed. He will take up his residence at Mataura.
