Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. for Dunedin South, and Mrs Sidey, arrived yesterday in Invercargill on a visit to the Mayor (Mr IV. A. Ott). Francis Stevens, a very old resident of Wellington, died yesterday morning, aged 78. He was connected with the commissariat department during the Maori war, and was afterwards in the Defence and Crown Lands Departments. He acted as secretary of the N. Z. Rifle Association’s meetings for many years.— Press Association. , A cable from Rome states that the Pope is confined to bed owing to an attack of influenza. A Melbourne cable announces th« death of Captain C. Sinclair, who was for many years master of different Union Company's boats, and afterwards became the company’s building superintendent in Scotland, and then superintendent for Australia. Fight applications were received for the position of resident surgeon of Nelson Hospital, rendered vacant through the resignation of Dr Mackay. H. E. A. Washbourne. M.D., has been selected. He was born af Collingwood and educated at Nelson College and Edinburgh University. He was for some years in a bank and is now practising at Sumner. Mr .1. C. Cooper has (says a Masterton telegram) been requested to contest Masterton seat in the Government interest, and has promised to consider the matter. An arrangement has (sa) - s a London cable) been made with the Admiralty for Fleet-paymaster Manisty to ,ioin the administrative staff of the Australian Navy at a salary of £750 per annum. On the . occasion of his transfer to Auckland, Mr Irwin Faris, railway a,udit inspector for Otago and Southland, was the recipient of a travelling companion from the senior members of the Invercargill office. Mr Dobbie, S.M., made the presentation, and referred to the harmonious and systematic manner in which Mr Faris had executed his duties. Mr Faris heartily thanked the donors for the present and goodwill accompanying it. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward are expected to arrive in Invercargill to-morrow evening by the second express, and, as already announced, the Prime Minister will be farewelled at Winton on Monday, at Bluff on Tuesday, and at Invercargill on Wednesday.
