FORTY YEARS SYNE

- OUE PIBST BALANCE - SHEET. "When the Mayor (Mr W. A. Ott) stated at the tramways ceremony a week or so ago that the ordinary revenue of Invercargill during Its first municipal year amounted to only £2 17s, there were people who doubted the accuracy of the figures. But the Mayor’s veracity is attested by a framed and certified copy of the first balanced sheet of the borough of Invercargill (for the year ended 31st December, 1871), which at the moment graces the wall of the Mayor’s Room in the Town Hall. The balancesheet in toto reads; —

I.i i u ii x v The balance - sheet is signed by Wm. Woods. .Mayor; and W. B. Scttndrett, Town Clerk; and is certified as correct by A. Macrorie and W. Flemington. To old residents of the town these names alone will conjure up a wealth of recollections. <u' the quartette mentioned there remains with us now only Mr W. Id. Hcanrtrott, who In the interim lias made municipal history.
