Following is Mr Bates' summary and forecast :—The weather has been very warm and hazy everywhere and the winds generally light and variable, but strong westerlies have prevailed in Foveaux Strait with heavy seas. The baro.meter has continued to rise. Present indications are for a slowly falling barometer everywhere. Moderate to strong westerly winds are probable northwards of New Plymouth and Napier and northerly winds elsewhere. The weather will probably continue warm and hazy, bu' Squally at times in the far South. A NEW INVENTION. WEIGHING CARGO LOADED. The porhydrometer. a new instrument Invented for automatically registering the weight of cargo loaded on vessels on which it is installed, is at present prominently under notice. Some excellent results have been attained wilh l f on the new steamer Anerley, recently built at Sunderland, and tin- lit’ t real test of the invention may be said to have been made on that vessel. Tim weight registered by the porh ydromel er when that vessel was loading coal at Cardiff was found to be absolutely correct when compared with the the weights given by the railway company. P.ul on two days during loading the porhydromeler registered two tons more than the railway weights. Two tons in 1300 tons seems a very small difference, but even that difference is probably accounted for by the delivery of stores mi board during the loading, us the instrument is so sensitive that it registers any additional weight. The following is an extract from the Anerley’s log relating to the porhydrometer;—SkF. Anerley, of London. —Abstract of Log.— Sun derland. 27th October. 1910 ; water ballast. 10S4 tons; porhydrometer, 10-.! tons. Bunkers shipped. 30l tons; pmhydrometer, 301 tons.
