MATAURA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) For some time the Mataura Bowling Club lias felt Unit the time has arrived when a suitable pavilion should be erected. Consequently on ■ Monday evening last a general meeting of 'members was held to discuss the matter, when Mr' Sherwood presided over a large gathering. .After a deal of discussion it was unanimously decided to authorise the Executive Committee to proceed with the erection of a pavilion at once at a cost not to exceed £ 150. It was admitted on every hand that sucli a building would be a decided adjunct to the Club and would tend to popularise it to a great extent. When tlie fixtures for the year were placed before the Club by the, Centre it was found that up till 22nd Februarynext the only inter-club matches to be played are 4-rink championships, thus necessitating the majority of the members in every club in tills district standing out of matches till that date. Owing to this and also that the Club has a large number of new members this year it was decided not to enter for the 4rink championships and to urge upon the Centre the necessity for providing clubs with homo and home matches apart from these. Four years ago the Club decided to allow ladies to become members upon the payment of 5s a year, but evidently the ladies are not as It e'en on the game as the gentlemen, for not one lady has so far applied for the privilege. At Monday’s meeting it was unanimously decided to allow ladies the free use of the green from 2 to 4 on. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, except when one of these is a holiday. No doubt this privilege will be taken advantage of to the fullest extent and soon the gentlemen players, will have to look to their laurels, for if the ladies take up the game with their usual energy and thoroughness they will soon bo showing them the way to the "Kitty.” . , The Club’s competitions are just about to commence the handicaps. Mr Holms has supplied the handicaps for the.handican doubles and colts’ handicap, and has “done this most arduous task in a most commendable manner. These two matches with the Championship singles should give members , plenty of games for some time. , , The local Band of Hope held its annual social last Friday evening when the Horticultural Hall was well filled with members and friends. Mr Bull, the energetic President, acted as chairman, and "presented a programme of wellsoleoted items. Several of these were contributed by the members themselves, who acquitted themselves in a very commendable manner. Valuable and much appreciated assistance was also rendered bv Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon, Misses-Wheeler-(2). and Wright. Messrs P Tait A. N. Mac Gibbon and Pryde, while a’choir under the direction of Mr A Stevenson contributed several selections. During the evening prizes were presented to the most regular at tenders at practices and meetings. At the conclusion of the musical programme refreshments were handed round by a band of energetic helpers under. Miss Macandrow, the popular secretary. Advantage was taken during the evening to honour one of the Society’s most untiring and enthusiastic workers. Miss S. i:«id, who is shortly to be married. Mr Bell ion behalf of the members, conveyed their heartfelt thanks and good wishes to that lady and presented her with a handsome sofa rug. Mr Peat responded for Miss Reid. The Mataura Brass Band turned out in full force on Sunday afternoon when it played a selection of suitable music before" a large crowd in the recreation ground. The efforts of the band were highly appreciated, especially the playing of old familiar hymns. Mr Carroll and his men are to lie congratulated, and deserve the hearty support of the whole community.
