. The Union S.S. Co.’s steamer Manuka left Melbourne at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, arrived at Hobart at 1 a.m. on Friday ; left again same day at noon, and arrived at Bluff at 5 a.m. yesterday. She met with light N. winds, which increased to strong on the 20th, with rising sea. The Manuka had 36 saloon and 130 steerage passengers for all ports, of whom 49 landed at Bluff. Among her inward cargo for Bluff were the following : 350 bags superphosphate, 45 bundles pipes, 21 casks colour, 20 drums arsenic, 9 bags canary 5eed,,427 packages figs, 229 cases fruit, 576 packages currants, 1372 packages sultanas, and a quantity of sundries. The early arrival of the steamer enabled the mails to be landed and sent on by special train to catch the first express to Christchurch. After landing 152 tons and shipping 150 tons the Manuka sailed for Dunedin at 5 p.m.

The U.S.S. Co.’s steamer Mperaki arrived from Dunedin early yesterday, after landing 223 tons and shipping SO tons she sailed for Melbourne at 5 p.m. The N.M. and A. Co. are advised that the s.s. Tainui arrived in Hobart yesterday morning. She will arrive in Wellington about the 26th Inst. Mr J. J. Kermode, whose patent liquid fuel system has been so uniformly successful in the British naval vessels equipped for burning oil fuel, states that some important developments maybe looked for in the near future in the more general use of oil-firing for marine and industrial purposes. For obvious reasons, precise details cannot be, given yet of tire important projects Mr Kermode is now negotiating, but there is no doubt that in course of time they Will mature, and will show that not only ocean-going steamships, but also railways, will have adopted oil fuel In place of coal. Further, this new- agency is engaging the serious attention of two well-known Atlantic steamship lines sailing from Great Britain. A recent equipment of a Dutch Government vessel with oil fuel installation has been such a success that Mr Kermode has been instructed to fit a second vessel of three times the power for the burning of oil fuel, and In regard to steamships alone the firm Is designing installations, representing a total of about 50,000 lorse-power.
