For the best horses competition Jwas fairly good, but aged and inferior draughts and weedy hacks were neglected. Others sold at £3 5 »o £27 for the most likely sorts; useful, «25 to £18; old and stiff horses to £2 10s. The hacks and light harness 'Jrorses were inostly common sorts. " GORE MARKETS. ,4 ' Oats.—ln the absence of offerings and s»wing to the continued dry weather the s»at market has improved considerably. r%nd during the past Week up to Is lid Sn trucks has been paid for A Gartons And Is lOd for A Sparowbllis. Growers Ere holding firm for 2s on trucks .at cmntry stations, and at present it looks s if their hopes are to be realised. The *sontinned dry weather in North. Otago and South Canterbury is creating a conwiderable demand for feed,, and:,there Is <lome little Inquiry ; from ’ the North (Island for B gfade. As there is a fair Quantity of oats ‘ available merchants Sre only operating In hand-to-mouth lashion as they consider that to speculate in a market that Is entirely dependent on weather conditions is too Jrisky. Chaff. —The same remarks apply to .chaff, the dry weather creating considerable demand for prime quality, which Jias been sold at £4 to £4 2s fid on trucks at country sidings. Holders of chaff are confident of being able to get higher prices during the next feW weeks, but should rains set in a good Hush of grass ■would' reduce considerably " the amount T»f chaff consumed. Ryegrass. —During the week the market has improved" considerably, ' and prime undressed farmers’.lines are worth ■urf to 2s 9d on trucks at country- sidings. There is very little grass available and better prices may be looked for.—Ensign. RIVERSDALE STOCK SALE. Dredging returns;— Golden lied, 40oz Idwt; Aiolyneux Hydraulic, 2ioz »dwt; Oirig, 220z 3dwt. hemp. Reporting upon the hemp market the New Zealand Trade Review says:—The market has again fallen very' quiet and any offers that can be drawn'from Condon are at slowly diminishing prices, but millers are disinclined to accept current rates, consequently very little business is pdbsible. Values are quoted, good fair, £2O; high point fair, £l7 lus to £l7 15s; low point fair, £l7 5s to £l7 10s, the tendency at present being towards furvher decline. Millers have often played the waiting game successfully, but tills has usually been when they were working on contracts disposing of their output for three or four, or more, months ahead/ They can then afford to wait calmly for another Jump in the market before entering into further contracts This season, however, the majority of them have firmly refused to enter into Contracts at ruling quotations. London with ample supplies of Manila and Sisal available, is not likely to "be inconvenienced by falling supplies from this quarter and we are simply losing our hold on the market.' Aflllers are all at work producing a pretty full output but unable In the majority of eases to make sales to their satisfaction. OTAGO MARKETS. oats And chaff, DUNEDIN, November 19. The position of oats remains very firm Applications for quotations are . being received from the north, but the high prices ruling are preventing a general acceptance of orders. At the same time a certain amount of business is going through, and prices have finned to an extent of i£d on the week. Sales have taken place at 2s 3%d (fo.b., sacks in) for B grade aparrowblils: 2s 4d for B grade Gurtons; and 2s 4ij.il for A grade Cartons. The dry weather lias caused quantities to be railed direct to Oamaru, and from a southern station a line went forward for which 2s was paid on trucks at the station. Farmers have every 1 confidence in, the future-of the market, and are holding tenaciously, and even, in one or two cases, are not averse to increasing their holdings, There is,"'however, not too sound a basis for the market, as a very general rain in Uio affected districts would put a slightly different noihploxion on affairs. The chaff market remains very firm, ind-the very best samples bring tip to "4 17s Gd, though £1 15s is a good averige price lor best in quantities. Potatoes are also very firm, and touch £l2 -per ton. The new season’s supply is now coming on, but "owing to the scarcity of old lota the price is well T.tuh tallied.

CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, November 10. Euslne.ss in the grain market lias to a certain extent been affected by the weather conditions, anti while the foreign markets have shown an easier tone the reverse has been the case in the Dominion, where there has been a decided hardening during the last few weeks. In oats, reports that the crops, which have been aitcctcil by the dry weather, and, which is now felt, even in spite ot the welcome rains which fell at the beginning of tiie, week, will fall short ot the average for normal years, have had their effect on the market, with the result that prices have hardened, and the current price for A grade Gartons has advanced to equal to 2s IVid. and B grade to 2s 3d f.o.b. Supplies arc short, practically no business having been done with farmer.: for some weeks. The potato market is weaker than it has been tor some time and the inclination of values is downward. The- business passing is* now very small, and several ' merchants have practically ceased operations.- The current price, which is nominal, is £!i to £9 5s on trucks at country stations. Voting potatoes are now coming on to the market freely, but it will be some time before they come into general use. AUCKLAND MARKETS. Reporting under date. 17th inst., the Auckland "Star" says:— Outs.—The market for oats is exceptionally strong at the present time, as the continued "dry weather in Canterbury still forces prices upwards with the result that an advance of 2d per bushel has taken [dace since last report.. The Quotation now for oats, f.0.b.. Southern ports, is 2s 3 Mid, which means 2s fid ex store ip Auckland, and there is still a strong tendency-upwards, its, considerable business has been done in 'the TSouttv ■by local mrochants at 2s 3?£d. They prefer to secure the higher price now offering in the South rather than bring the oats purchased ahead up to this market to be sold in small lines. Potatoes.- —As intimated last week, arrivals of old potatoes from Australia have now almost ceased, only some 200 sacks coming to hand since last report, the rest being new potatoes from Sydney, which, despite the dutj" of £1 per ton, can be sold here at' 1.2s to 14s per cwt, which is the same as the rates ruling for those grown locally. The blight has appeared in some places, but is not making much progress, as so late in the season the growers are able to cope with the disease. The crops are still maturing all right. An inquiry-has set in from the South for new potatoes, which shows that stocks of old are exhausted throughout the Dominion. It will be about three or four weeks before our own new potatoes reach this market in any Quantity, when export .South will probably set in. RABBZTSKINS. LONDON, November 18. At the rabbitskin sales there were large offerings, and an average market. Fair to good sold at a penny to twopence lower, and inferior at late rates to a halfpenny lower. 1
