BOWLING TOURNAMENT

YESTERDAY’S PLAY.

(By ‘’Skip.”)

Fine weather made the games played on the various town greens very enjoyable ,and the programme of play was carried out without any hitch. The only section in which a winner was found as a result of yesterday’s play was the 7th, where Hain’s rink ran through without a loss, while all the others had two or more losses. The surprise In this section was the defeat four times in succession of Ingram's Gore team. Rennie's rink has four wins, and has to play Reed, who has three wins and one loss, on Monday morning. The Winton Club, who only opened their green last month, have a rink in the tournament and are to be heartily congratulated on their play. They were beaten by only eight points by Sheddan, and they also lost to W. Smith by two points and to Strang by one. In the fourth game they, however, fairly excelled themselves by beating J. Allan’s Korthend rink by one point. With two ends to go Allan was two up and when Winton got four at the next head making them two up the excitement became intense. Blomfleld, the W'inton lead, opened the last head with a pretty shot—a toucher just behind the kitty. Allan got his man to drive and Thomson with his second got the kitty, and Winton’S toucher into the ditch, Thomson lying shot with Winton a good second. Hollo- ’ way failed to alter matters, but Findlay, the Winton third, drew another second shot, and neither of the skips making any change the game ended in favour of Winton by one point. Three hearty cheers were given for the Winton Club for their plucky win. At Te Rahgl in Section No. 1, Mclntyre’s rink has run a successful course, putting up four wins. The only team to give these Taieri men a close fight was Howie’s Southland rink. With the last end to go Howie was two points down, but he failed at jthis point and Mclntyre ran out a winner. Hannah’s Northend team has to meet Taieri on Monday morning, and the sectional winner will come from one of these two rinks. In Section 2, Allan and Sheddan have an equal number of wins. Allan plays Holmes and Sheddan plays W. Smith. Should they both win there will be a tie to play off. On the other hand should they both lose four of the competitors will tie, and this will cause delay. On. this occasion the executive are strongly for the top dogs. It win be noted that Beer’s Riverton rink, which did so well recently in the Shield Matches, has again been successful, and with McNatt£ (Southland), and McLennan (St. Kilda) is In the lead, each of these three teams having three wins. Stewart, of Te Rangi, has entered for the fun of the game, and has made a good struggle against heavy odds. If young players just keep pegging away in this spirit their turn will come. In Section 4. Crockett’s Bluff team has upset the calculations of the cognoscenti and are at the top of tire list so far. , If they cap hold the fort against McLaren on Monday morning they will he section winners, even if they lose they will tie for the section. But in this contingency it is practically certain there will be four rinks scoring the same number ■of wins, one of the disadvantages of the section system from the point of view of the executive, so Crockett carries the ■ best wishes of officialdom in his last game. Bailey and Bentley tie for Section B. The former meets Manson, and the lat- • ter Erskine. Prophets predict that Bailey will win the section. -.
