MATAURA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MATAURA. Jan. .14. The present season so far has not boon a good one for anglers. Tho high winds prevailing have not been conducive to that particular sport. On Wednesday tho Mataura Angling Club held their third competition, but only six anglers took part. Tho Club’s prizes were won as follows ; Air R. Allison first (value £1 Is) ; and W. Allison second (a fly book, presented by Messrs Wilkie and Co.) The former, fishing in the Wairokiki, secured 19 fish weighing 131b I loz. The latter, fishing in tho Mimihau, secured 17 fish weighing 141b 7oz ; but. being handicapped ten per cent, came in second place by only Soz. The third prize, which was donated by Mr Cclquhoun, foil to J. Barclay, who from the Mirnihau took five fish weighing 71b loz. ’ The President’s medal for the heaviest hags in the two competitions fell to Air R. Allison, with a total weight of 321b 4%0z. The continuance of high winds is drying up the pastures and bringing down the supply of milk at the factories. Oat crops arc being stunted, and it is now certain that they will bo short with little straw, and unless turnips get more rain and less wind soon there will bo poor crops. The question that is mostly exercising tho minds of many people here just now is what is to be the upshot of the slaughtermens’ strike, as the district is affected in a special manner by its settlement.
