SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS.

SOUTHLAND EDUCATION BOARD. At yesterday's meeting of the Southland Education Hoard the various scholarships were allotted as under. The official results of the examinations only eame to hand in tho morning, so that there is a possibility (probably remote, however) some of tho figures shown may be inaccurate.. M lias to be explained that in the case fit’ (lie junior national scholarships, three of which are awarded to Southland, one is for pupils attending schools with an attendance of 10 and under; one for schools with an attendance of between -10 and 20h ; and one for schools having an attendance of more than 200 scholars. Those scholarships, available for two years, £lO per annum if the winner lives away from home while attending the High School, and £lO pei annum if he lives at home while attending sclidol, aro available only under certain restrictions. A scholar whoso parents have an income exceeding £250 a rear may not hold a national scholarship. It will therefore bo necessary for this condition to be fulfilled before the national scholarships can be finally claimed, in tho meantime tho scholarships are allotted tentatively on a merit basis. Tlie money available for Junior and Senior Board scholarships is granted to country and town scholars in proportion to numerical strength of pupils in country and town respectively. Non-resi-dent scholarships are worth 130 a year, and resident scholarships (the pupils being able to live at home during the school year) are wortli £5 a year. The results, provided the conditions above referred to are fulfilled, will be as follows : JUNIOR NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS. Marks. Samuel ,T. Thompson (Olenham) .. Cl 6 Oliver A. B. Smith (Park) 991 Robert C. Marrls (Waihppai) .. . . 553 JUNIOR BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS. Resident scholarships wortli £5 per annum for two years : Frederick W. Mitchell (Park) 555 Gladys H. Paterson (Qore) 561 Eric C. S. Marshall (South) 558 Dorothy J. Lambeth (South) .... 549 Aubrey C. Wilting (Park) 549 John W. McKiuna (East Gore) 545 Arthur L. Mitchell (Park) 544 Percy E. .Rice (Park) 519 Gertrude IVI, Stevenson (South) .. 517 Irene B. Brown (Gore) 494 Non-resident scholarships, worth £3O per annum for two years : Myrtle R. Wood (Winton) 550 Geoffrey Wild (Spar Bush) 538 William Cockroft (Lurnsden) .... 523 Amelia McClure (Waihopai) .... 517 Isabella Biggar (Croydon) 505 SENIOR BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS. James G. Anderson (Invercargill), £5 4SU Robert L. Christie (Gore), £3O .. 1497 Bertha L. Kidd (Winton), £3O .. 1387 Robert Christie will attend the Southland High School. It is possible that, when the information necessary to finally award the national scholarships has been obtained, the Board may have sufficient funds.* to allot another one or two Junior Board scholarships, resident or non-resident, as the money is available for town or for country in their definite proportions.
