ENCOUNTER DISASTER
THE COURT’S FINDING. NEGLIGENCE BLAMED. By Telegraph.—Presa Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, Feb. 12. Received Feb. 12, at 9.25 p.m. At the enquiry Into the Naval disaster, the Coroner found that the collision between the Dunmore and H.M.S. Encounter’s Pinnace, was caused by the negligent and careless navigation of Bryant, coxswain of the Pinnace, who has been committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter. The Coroner said that it appeared to him that if the towline between the launch and the Pinnace had been fastened so that it could have been quickly cast off in case of emergency there would have been no loss of life. The captain of the Dunmore had followed the regulations applicable to a case of the kind, and he must be held acquitted of criminal negligence; but the Coroner was of opinion that he and his crew had not sufficiently exerted themselves to save others. Also he was of opinion that Bryant was to some extent the victim of circumstances.
