Midwives
(To illo Editor.) Sir. — Ito Nurse Hoclger.s’ ease, T thoroughly agree ivilh the mnurks of ])rs Voting ami lion;;, ami it is monstrous to think thill the present Act did not provide for qualifying nurses till over New Zealand who had for years practised successfully as mid wives long hell ire this Act came into force, and to ask those muses now to no through a year's (or any less time; training at sonic public institution is nothing Jess than an insult.
If Nurse Rodgers’ case (or any .similar ones) is gone on with, midwifery will, as the doctors properly say, be quite unworkable, as under the new Act few or none have the necessary status, and the results will ho most serious, About twenty years ago, when coal mine managers had to be certificated, those who had boon in charge of a mine employing a number of men for some years wern granted certificates. So should midwives, and the Act ought to be amended at once. —I am, etc., WILLIAM HANDVSIDIO. Sth May. To the Editor, Sir, —I noticed in the paper the statement that there are 17 or 18 women practising in Invercargill. With so much competition it takes a trained nnrso coining here a stranger years to work up a practice. If certificated midwives are wanted in New Zealand there is only one course open—let the midwives who have given both time and money to qualify live. —1 am, etc., PORTIA. iitli May.
