Borough Council Reports

Following are the reports to be presented at to-night’s meeting of the Borough Council : Public Works. The Committee recommend : (1) That the engineer prepare specifications tor--(a) Paving the creek from Luidol to Clyde street, (b) paving the creek from Clyde to Nlth street, and (c) erecting a wall on the north side of the creek between Clyde and Nlth streets, and that separate tenders bo invited for the work ; provision to be made in this year's estimates for the cost of work. (2) That a four-stall cast-iron urinal be substituted for the present wooden one In Esk street at the rear of the Athenaeum. The Committee report ; (3) Having held over the Northend outfall drain question for further consideration. (4) Having hold over the question of the drainage in Elies Road from Tweed street to the Punt creek ponding replies from the Borough of South Invercargill and the Southland County Council re their proportion of cost, (li) Having granted the foreman of works leave of absence for a fortnight. (.0) Having granted the Railway Workshops football Club, Y.M.C.A. Hockey Club, and the St. John's Hockey Club the use of certain reserves, on condition that any rights now existing are not interfered with in any way. (7) Having granted the gardener's requisition for grass seed to the value of £2. Ctns and Water.

The Committee recommend ; (1) That Ihe town clerk prepare and submit a return showing in detail the number and cost of laying water services during the last six months compared with the corresponding period last year. The Committee report : (2) That the water engineer’s suggestion with reference to the engineers taking shift about is still under consideration. (3) Having carefully considered the report from the abattoir manager with respect to the general working of abattoirs in the north, and with the view of improving the present system here, recommend giving the whole of the butchers three months’ notice that the corporation Intend undertaking the whole of the slaughtering at the abattoir at the expiring of the time stated; the Committee to make the necessary arrangements accordingly, (4) Having granted the gas manager leave of absence to enable him to visit the north. (3) Having visited ihe gasworks and had a general view ,of the building operations going -on, and wo are satisfied with the works now being undertaken. t6) Having accepted the tenders of the Westport Coal Co. for the supply of Westport coal at 27s per ton for unscreened and 24s per ton for small coal ; and of Thus. Brown for the supply of Abermaln coal at 28s Id for screened coal. 27s Id for unscreened and 23s Id for small coal. The gas manager proposes to use three-quarters of Westport and one-quarter Abermain during the year. Pittance. The Committee recommend : (1) That Messrs McEwan and Dewe he granted licenses for their cabs for a period of six months and subject to their good behaviour. (2) That Mr .las. Stewart be thanked for his information and his advice, and that notice be posted in the limelight house " that the water pressure weights must be filled to overflowing when using the mixed gases." (3) That the map of the proposed reclamation of ihe harbour as prepared by Mr T. S. Millar be forwarded to the Marine Department for their aproval so that the Council may he advised at as early a date as possible if it is necessary to take steps to put a bill through the coming session. The Committee report: (4) With respect to the licensing of churches, recommend that no action be taken. (5)~ Having authorised the fire superintendent to have the main doors of the central station painted and lettering done ns recommended. (0) With reference to the application from the petitioners with respect to making a road to Otatara, have held over consideration of same until a reply is received from the Marine Department in connection with the proposed reclamation. 17) With respect to a communicaiton from the solicitors with reference to the leasing of the harbour endowment at Awarua Siding, have ascertained that Messrs Mitchell and Howie, the present lessees, are prepared to accept an unregistered lease; the solicitors to be informed accordingly. (8) Have fully considered the question of jetty haulage, and recommend that a second carter be advertised for to work on the jetty when required ; tiie rest of his time to be on the roads under the Public Works Department. (9) Having examined accounts amounting to £1854 lls Gd, and recommend that they be paid. Special Water Committee. The Committee report: (1) Having met, and after considering the proposed schemes for additional water supplv, held over the question of making a recommendation until certain returns have been prepared and submitted bv the town clerk.
