Caledonian Society's Concert.

The Victoria Hall was comfortably filled last night for the concert arranged by the Caledonian Society. As might have been expected a number oi the performers were Caledonians and rendered Scotch Meins and the others, not to the manner bom, did their best, in their selection, to choose songs which would stilt the taste of the audience. The President of the Society, Mr tV. Timpany, presided, and according to old custom made a few remarks suitable to the occasion. His speech was of necessity a brief one, and he contented himself with saying a word or two in justiCcaition of the annual social, and with pointing out to those interested that the directors had not bt-ood still in the matter of popularising tho annual sports gathering. In the course of the evening tho shield won by the Southland Pipe Hand was presented by the Mayor (Mr 'C 13. Scandrett) to the bund dllicers. Pipe-Major G. Anderson received the trophy on behalf of the band, and In responding, made reference to tile fact that the head officer. Drum-Ma-jor Macgregor who was absent from the colony would have been very proud to have been present to acknowledge receipt of the prize. Past year the Society hit upon the idea of holding competitions for pianoforte playing and recitations in connection with their concert and this year a fair amount of interest was taken in them. There wore five competitors in the pianoforte competition. the first prize being awarded to Masiter C. A. Martin, and the eccondto Miss Daisy Dunnett. Them were eight candidates for the elocution contest, the piece set being Burns’ “ Cotter’s Saturday night. The prizes fell to E. Eiarsman firs , and E. McKillop second. The work done in this competition was very creditable, particularly that of tho winner, who was awarded 95 per c*nt of the possible marks. Mr H{Trial Seareli acted as judge in tho

J music contest, ■ and Mr T* B. Pearce, 1 !M.A., in the recitation competition. The programme, which was a very long one, was diverse in character, comprising songs, recitations, instrumental items, and Highland dan-, ces. Lach of space moke impossible l even the most cursory reference to individual performers, but throughout the programme the items were undeniably good. To single out one performer as being worthy of especial merit. Miss Mclntosh may bo mentioned as having carried off the honours of the evening. She was in excellent voice and her singing of her selected pieces, “ Allan Water ” and “ Life ” as well as that of a pretty little encore song, was much appreciated. Two Scotch songs, sung' by Mrs Colville were also heartily applauded. On the whole the concert was an undoubted success and the audience was at all times well satisfied with the entertainment.
