Alarming Railway Accident.
SERIOUS-.DAMAGE TO ROLLING ■' ■ ' : STOOK^. Per. United Press"Association. , WANGANUI, Jan. 26. A serious accident occurred to aq excursion train returning to Wanganui from the band contest last night. The train left Hawera with 00 excursionists and, reaching Momohaka at 12.12 a.m., slowed down approaching the platform. • The. passengers experienced a heavy jolt, and on the train being pulled • up it was found that the engine and tlirisc leading cars were derailed, the rads being bent and spread very badly. The occupants of the leading car had a narrow escape, Two who wore sitting oh the platform were pitched off to the side of the track, v-hile a lad sitting in a corner next the door had his leg grazed by the sharp end of a point rail which pierced the floor and scat, curving round in front of \he lad. Other occupants escaped with nothing worse than a fright. The cause of the accident was probably that the car following the engine jumped the points. The engine is badly damaged, a pair of wheels find axles being wrenched off, and found under the middle of the leading, car. The ballasting was ulcughcd up fol‘\ a distance of 40 yards.
