At a meeting of the New Zealand Institute Sir James Hector was elected president, the other offices being filled ns follows : —Treasurer, Mr Joynt ; secretary, Mr Cell ; editor and librarian. Mr Hamilton. Dr Coleridge Farr reported that magnetic survey work had been resufhed and that the observational work would be completed iwithin the next two or three months. A motion that a summary of metorological returns bo included in the volumes of tho Transactions of the Institute was negatived. The meeting placed on record its sense of deprivation in the death of Professor Hutton and a short adjournment was made as a tribute of respect to tho memory of the deceased scientist.
