The Gore Street Fatality
ACQUITTAL OF MR WHITTINGHAM.
By Telegraph
From Our Own Correspondent.
GORE, Friday. At the Court, to-day, before Messrs -James Beattie and J. S. Millar, J’s.P., John. L. Whittingham was charged with manslaughter, as the outcome of a coroner’s jury's finding on 15th December regarding the death of Mrs Margaret Winsloe, who died as the result of a collision between Whittingham’s trap and a motorcar in which the deceased was riding. Police Inspector Mitchell prosecuted, and Mr A. C. Hanlon (Dunedin) appeared for the accused. The evidence was similar to that given at the inquest. Mr Hanlon’s address lasted 15 minutes. The Benell, after 10 minutes’ consideration, said that the evidence was not sufficient to warrant them in sending accused to take his trial before a jury, although, in their opinion, there had been neglect in some manner or another. The charge was dismissed.
