Queer Position for a Church Bell.
In several respects tho village of Leadhills is the most romarkahlu in Scut hind. It stands 1100 foet above sea-level, and boasts the oldest froa library in the Sand. Its bell, occupying a prominent place in tho heart of the village, is hunjj, not in a church steeple, as in other villages, but from v, wooden erection specially designed lor the
purpose. The bell is 11 survival from olden times, when as use was more real than now. Although originally hunt; for the purpose of calling the parishioners to worship, it, is now rung for the good of other institu/ions as well. Indeed, it may now he said to be more the village than the chinch bull, us it i.s rung for the. village school, "ihe miners at work, as a signal for the inhabitants to extinguish the light and retire to rest, and for funerals, as well a* lor the various phuroh wryfaes, -~^. ..... .....
