Ail;?. 3 Received 3rd, 11.3-1 p.m. A deputation, representing (.'liambers of Commerce, manufacturers, mines, tlio Stock Exchange, ani other leading commercial institutions, nsked Premier Barton to repeal the clause of tho Postal Act prohibiting the employment of coloured labour 'on mail steamei's. They insert that it would have a detrimental effect on commerce owing to the inability of white stokers to work in tropical seas.; that Indians are British subjects ; that it is highly important not to dissociate tho Commonwealth from the British Government in the mail contracts, and that the clause generally was unworkable. The Premier replied that it Was quite impossible to ask Parliament to repeal the clause until it had been givon a trial. If he did ask he was certain that there was no chnncu of securing a majority in favour of repeal. Tindors would shortly bo called for a service via S'uov, or Vancouver, and when tne result was seen it would be time to decide the matter. Received 4th, 1.10 v.in. The Cabinet disvussyd tho appointment of Mr Kingston's successor but, pending Mr Kingston's final decision to-morrow, whether he will rJ-acwpt his portfolio, nothing was decided.
