A narrow escape from drowning and heroic rescue by a wife and mother is reported from Croixelles. Mr W. J. Stewart, of York station, went across the harbour to Whangarei in a boat, accompanied by his little child Florence, in order to get his mail, and Mrs Stewart watched the boat, which was considerably loaded. She went indoors for a moment and on returning could no longer see the boat. With aid of a telescope she then saw that it had capsized and that her husband and tltiughter were struggling in> tne wat-
er. She ran to the shore, launched a frail boat, and rowed out — a distance of three miles— not without very considerable risk. On .reaching the capsized boat she found. her husband clinging with one hand to the boat and with the other supporting their daughter, who was then unconscious. Aided by -Mrs Stewart ail got ashore after Mr Stewart arid the girl had been in the water for about' two hours. The girl remained unconscious for some hours, but they are now recovering.
