Riverton.
(From Odb Own Correspondent )
The committee of the Biverton Racing Club, at their meeting on Saturday, taking into consideration the prosperous condition of the Club's nuances, decided to increase the stakes at the" Easter meeting by £100, thus makincr the added money £540. The extra money is allotted to two of the steeplechases and three of the flat races. The Open Steeplechase is raised- to £75, the Biverton Steeplechase te £50 and the Biverton, Easter and Stewards' Handicaps to £75, £50 and £30 respectively. I think the action of the Club is worthy of special notice, and it will, I think, tend td make our already popular meeting deserving of still greater patronage. Mr Gibbs (of Gore) was appointed handicapper. We are a little ahead of you lnvercargillites in the matter of the memorial to fallen soldiers, as the erection of our monument will be started in a few days. About fifty designs were submitted to our committee, and a plain yet handsome one by Messrs Bergamini and Reid, of Dunedin, was finally selected. This is to be erected in gray Aberdeen granite at tke junction of Palmerston and Paddock streets, and will be a conspicuous and beautiful memorial to tbo boys from Wallace, whose lives were freely given for the Empire, and of each of whom it may be said " nbn We— pro patria timidii-* perlre."
