STAR XI. V. STAR XIII. This match was concluded on the Eastern Reserve yesterday, the Eleven winning by 40 runs on the first innings. For the winners in their second innings W. Black and Aspray put on 114 for tho first wicket, the former playing vigorous cricket for 77. Following were the scores : — Eleven:—W. Black, b Patterson, 77; Aspray, c Patterson, h Mentiplay, 39; Wann, run out, 5; G. Black, c Gibson, b. Mentiplay, 1; Turner, b Gibson, 1; Strang, run out, 0; Thomson, run out, 42; Cowan, not out, 18; Corner, run out, 4; Travis b Gilbertson, 21; extras, 6.—Total, 227. Thirteen : — Wesney, c Thomson, b Corner, 5; Steans, b G. Black, 8; Stevens, run out, 13; Patterson, b G. Black, 22; Gibson, c Turner, b G. Black, 3 ; Mentiplay, not out, 2; Dewar, not out, 7; extras, 2.—Total for 5 wickets, 62. For the winners, G. Black took three wickets for 24, and for the other side, Gilbertson 1 for 11 and Mentiplay 2 for 58, were the most successful. Tho Von. Archdeacon Stocker and Mr A. Ayling officiated as umpires. The annual interprovincial match, Otago v. Southland has been fixed for Wednesday and Thursday, 20th and 21st February at Invercargill.
