At a meeting of the directors of the Belmont Company, held yesterday evening, Mr Win. Murray was appointed dredgemaster. Mr Murray was one of the dredge-masters who worked the dredge on the suction principle and in hi a report he expressed the opinion that with an up-to-date dredge from 60 to 100 ounces of gold per week would be obtained. Mr. Murray (who is at present dredgemaster of the Oleniti dredge) has unbounded confidence in . , the Belmont claim, and the directors iii making the appointment have carried , out the expressed wish of many of ■;.;- the shareholders. The first load of machinery goes forward this week from Otautau, and every effort will be made to push . on with the work of reconstruction immediately after the holidays. The machinery of "the Milestone Com ' ■'< pany's "dredge is now nearly all in position, and it is expected that a trial run will be made this week. The Warden's Court sat in Gore on Friday, Mr D. Barron, Commissioner of Crown Lauds, presiding. The application of H. S. Jones for a prospecting license at Pyramid was granted, and that of D. J. Bews for a water race of six heads following the natural ..- cbannel of the Waimumu refused on the ground that the Minister had prenously Withheld his consent. The application of .... J. A. Yule for a water race of two heady - ; from a tributary of Charlton Creek, objected to by Thomas Green and the Charlton Creek G.D. Company, was heard and judgment re- . served. J. A. Yule's application for a prospecting license of ten acres between sections 495 and 496, Hokonui, on the one . hand, and to the centre of Charlton Creek on the other, and also part of the roadline between sections 495 and 496, objected to by Thos. Green, the Charlton Gold Dredging Co, the Southland County Council and E. It. Ford, was, after hearing the evidence of T. Green, C. Bennett, M. Foley, J. B. Paterson, J. Mac Gibbon and S. E. Denniston, held over till the Commissioner could visit the ground. The annual report of the directors of the Waimumu G.D. Co. states that the ri-sult of the year's working would have Ijreri much more profitable but for the trouble experienced in combating a large quantity of clay met with. Not only has a large quantity of stuff to be put tbrougli with no result, but the presence of the clay prevents the i 6aving of much of the gold. The dredge is : . now working out of this class of ground. The directors had purchased about 21 acres . pf good dredging ground adjoining the present property at £1 7 per acre. The ground was well prospected, and appears to be at least equal to the average of the best Waijnumu Flat. Dividends amounting to £700 have been declared; the proceeds from the ; . Bale of gold totals £3382 lls Id, and there is a balance in hand of £311 19s Id.
