Ehen Fugaces.
It has gone like a vision that Beeteth — , My glittering prospect of gain. ' The year that so swittly retreateth Still sees me woo Fortune in vain. I thought when the Cup race was over, To wealth I should suddenly leap, And close my existence in clover— The winner of Tattereall's sweep ! Hx>w solemnly guiltless of joking I've studied alternative schemes Forspending my shekels, while smoking And dreaming Hope's dazzling daydreams ! Perchance for a sail o'er the ocean I'd almost decided to go : Then how to accomplish the notion — By Orient 1 French ? P. and 0. ? Before I could get any farther I'd end about where I began, And think on the whole I would rather Paas Europe, and jaunt to Japan. Bub stay : in thia country I'd tarry, Beneath Federation to biom, And make me a mansion and marry — 'Tis settled— Bub when ? where? and whom ? And still with such problems unfinished, Contented I'd hie me to bed : Next evening with zeal undiminiehed I'd formulate fresh opes imtead. To-nighfc o cr the drawing I grumble — The Goddess my faith disregards ; And down with a terrible tumble Comes my annual caatle of cards. —From 'Arena.'
