Appreciation of the Short horn.

(N. B. Agriculturist) Many other shorthorn f-aleß hava done excellently, but tho one atTiilycairn thißyear has excelled them all. The sale of the Collynie and Uppermill ball calves ia always one of the most notable events of the shorthorn year, and shorthorn breeders all the world ovor proudly point to the high prices aDnually realised ab this sile as an incontestable evidence of the publio appreciation of ' the red, white, and roars ' They have all a d?ep and real interest in it therefore, and this year thf y were disposed to fear that, on account of the distracting influence of the gane-al election, and the foot-and-mouth disease restrictions which prevent any stock from Great Britain baing imported into Ireland or the "Argentine at the present time, the Ti'lycairu sale would not be marked by the buoyancy with which it has been characterised in reoect years. Bat, in spite of tihe f e cntoward infl.enefß, tie a le was of the most sensational order, and all previous records for individual prices and averages for ball calves were brokea ia a most decisive w-y, aa the nimtden bull calves from Collynie realiz3d an average of £150 8a CJ, with a highest price of £355 g',; while thirteen bull cilves from Uppermiil realised an average of £126 .Si 21, with a highest price of 230 gp. All through the sale three-figure prices wfr<a the order of the day, no fewr on an nineteen of the thirty-two animals so!d fetohioglOOgs. or upwards, and cix of them realised 200gs. and upwar la, while three of them were sold at300g9., 350g8., ond'3ssgr. respectively. The prdvious record for best average in respect of bull calves wai that of Mr Duthie last year, when twenty ball calves cold at an average of £123 I§*, but that is now thrown in theßhaie by his average of £150 8 61. Th<i previoui record for highest price of a bull calf was 330 gs., paid at tbeTillycairn sale two yrars ago by Mr Duthie for the calf Scottish Clnmpion ; but this record was twice broken at the sale last week, first by the Pride of Morning calf Primrore Pride, sold for 350g9., and later on by the Silver Plate calf Violet. Victor, sold for 355ge., the Prince of Walei' agent being the runnfr up for this record-breaker.
