Bluff Harbour Board
«. , TO TIIE EDITOR. Sib, — Every one admits that the work of .the Bluff Harbour Board has been very well managed for years and is therefore one of the most successful local bodies in Southland. Considerable credit is due to Mr J. W. Mitchell, who has been about fen years the indefatigable and worthy chairman of that institution, yet unlike mayors and county council chairmen, lie gets no honorarum for his very valuable and arduous services, travelling to the Bluff three or four times a week in the faithful perfor mance of his responsible public duty. Are the people of Southland willing that this onesided I state of affairs should go on? I think not. Southlanders are anything but mean, and I am certain it only requires mention of the fact to have some tangible • acknowledgement voted by the Board as honorarium for Mr Mitchell's services to the people. Some may say that it cannot be done without; special legislation : Then in this instance, whan the port and Board offices are 17 miles distant from the main town, the members of tho Board should take the matter in hand and see it successfully carried through. I trust this will bo done at the earliest opportunity. — I am, &c., 14th Dec. D. McFarlane.
