STAR XI V. APPLEBY.
This match was commenced on the Eastern Reserve yesterday. The recent heavy rain made the wicket heavy, but despite this drawback some good batting was shown. Appleby's first innings produced 126, Kane playing well and patiently for 39, and Geddes hit out vigorously for 21 (not out). At call of time the Star had 3 wickets down for 69— W. Black, 2 ; Langdon, b Gibson; 2 ; Stead, b Black, 3 ; Matson, b Black, 7 ; Ferguson, c Gibson, b Thomson, 9 ; Purdue, b Thomson, 1 ; Poole, b Black, 16 ; Geddes (not out), 21 ; Strang, st McKay, b Gibson, 3; Maguire, c VV. Black, b G. Black, 13; extras, 11- total, 126. Black took 5 wickets for 38, Gibson 3 for 43 and Thomson 2 for 14. Star : W. Black (not out), 25 ; Strang, lbw, b Matson, 8 ; Warm, b Grindlay, 3 ; Thomson, b Grindlay, 6 ; McKay (not out), 22 ; extras, s—total5 — total for 3 wickets, 69, Grindlay took 2 wickets for 23 and Matson 1 for 27.
