Men tiplay, Ythan street, stated r • that some months ago water leaked through the bottom of the stone wall, coming from springs in the ground cut under when the street., was cut down to its present level. , * The water did not come from her drains, and :;v: fc. the inspector told her to deposit 10s at the ; ~ Council office, and men would be sent to '»'"" , examine the spot and inquire into the cause : of the flow, if not needed the money was to be returned. She lodged the 10s and a man put in some cement where it had broken away. The man was only an hour at the work. When the writer called to collect . her 10s she received 2s and was told the 8s was for the man's day's work. She therefore asked that the 8s be refunded, as she did net see why she should be called upon to keep up the Corporation's wall. — Councillor Longuet said the street was certainly in an objectionable condition and should be attended to. — Councillor Stead said that although the writer should contribute, 8s seemed to be an exorbitant charge for an hour's work.- I—Referred1 — Referred to the Works Committee. Henry Craven asked for a reduction in rates as the house on section- 10, block 11, was vacant during the curtent year, and had now been pulled down. — Referred to the Finance Committee. Turnbull and Jones, electrical engineers, forwarded copies of electric lighting par , ticulars issued by the Launceston Town '■^ Council, and bylaws passed in connection * therewith. — Councillor Longuet said he \ -._ thought there was really something in this, .•!•#.* and it had been before the Council before. — 'i._ Referred to the Gas Committee. x -'- The N.Z. Hardware Co. protested against . paying a license for each kerosene store. They said that no charge was made in Dun"\edin for the bulk store. — The Mayor said this matter hadxbeen before the Council previously and nothing else should be done. — , ' Councillor Roche moved that the letter be reoeived, as it was simply a bumptious dictation to the Council. — Councillor Scandrett moved, as an amendment, that the letter be referred to the Finance Committee, as the Council might be making an overcharge and it would be well to look into the matter. — Seconded by Councillor Stead and carried. _, i Thirty ratepayers asked the Council to consider the necessity of asphalting the north side of Earn street, from Clyde to Ness etreet. They drew attention to the fact that the money for this work was voted 15 years ago, and they hoped the Council would at* tend to the work at their earliest convenience. — Referred to the Works Committee. Maggie Compton was granted permission to erect a signboard over her shop in Dee street subject to the usual conditions. F. G. Stone asked the Council to deepen the drain opposite his house, as he could not get sufficient fall. — Referred to the Works Committee. The inspector reported that during the past fortnight 124 cattle, 684 sheep and 45 pigs were slaughtered at the abattoir. Of this number 2 cattle were condemned as unfit for food. The engineer reported on the prices of gravel delivered in Invercargill from different places as follows : — Gore 3s 6d, screened 4s 6d ; Dipton 3s 5d ; Oporo2s 7kl; hospital, ready screened on ground, Is 9tl. — Referred to the Works Committee. The Works Committee recommended — ( 1 ) That 'steps be taken to have an Act passed empowering the Council to lease for a term of years for building purposes, on same conditions as the municipal leases, the pound reserve, sections 7 to 10 and 12 to 16, block 46 ; (2) that the Mayor be authorised to purchase from the Southland Hospital Trust 30 or 40 yards of gravel for asphalting purposes ; (4) report having, held over the question of appointment of a permanent maintenance staff till next meeting of the Committee ; (5) having considered Mrs Walker's complaint about the valuations of improvements -on her leasehold, and are of opinion that as the respective ■valuators had agreed as to the valuations made that the Council should not interfere. — Adopted. The Finance Committee recommended — (2) That the Mayor be authorised to give in- . structions to erect a brick and concrete receptacle at the abattoir ; (3) report having agreed to remit the rates (£1 14s 2d) on section _11, block 19 ; (4) having considered the application from four members of the ■:• fire brigade for compensation for personal effects lost by them by the fire at the ■ brigade station, and have no recommenda- > tion to make ; (5) having resolved tb hold -'.. over in the meantime the matter of ordering a gasholder j (6) having passed accounts ; to £365 lis lOd : municipal V^- £341 14s 8d (£332 being transfer to gas ?,';■'• account for street lighting) ; gasworks, "'■- £8 9s 2d ; waterworks, abattoir and harbour « £15 Bs. On clause 4 Councillor Longuet said that the committee felt that there were some items in the claims that they did not care to take the full responsibility of deajing with. Still, the committee thought that although they could hardly refund the money lost, yet for the loss of clothes, etc., the firemen should be recompensed.—^Councillor Scandrett said tha-? if the men were foolish . enough to keep money on the premises they should bear the consequences. For their \; personal effects, however, they might be _ .. granted a fair amount. He would therefore move., as an amendment that the men be apked to give particulars -of their personal effects that were lost. — Councillor Stead seconded the amendment. — The motion that the clause be adopted, moved by Councillor : McKellar and seconded by Councillor Ott, r was carried and the report as a whole was adopted. liie gasworks manager reported that during the past fortnight two men less had tyeen employed — a saving of £4 18s per week —and prooably another man would be dis- _ pensed with shortly. During the past six months there had been as atisfactory in- , .crease in the eonsumpt of gas. From April '*- to -September (inclusive) 13,423,600 cubic fe*B$ J had been made, an increase of 1,064,400, .equal' to 8 per cent., over the same period sjjast year. The receipts from "gas sales and showed an .increase of £300. — Re- . ferred to the Gas Committee. Tne sanitary inspector reported that the .-^condition of the borough was good, and that the butchers' premises were kept in a cleanly eiate. Part of the drain for removing sewage from the house at the pound, occupied by Mrs Waugh, was an open drain, f and he recommended ' that it be piped as soon as possible. — Left in the hands of the r- Mayor. As the Council had instructed the Waterworks Department to submit suggestions for retrenchment during the summer , months, the ens'ineer gave details of the of the works, showing that every - thing was being done to keep down expense.
