Otautau Races and Sports

There was a large attendance at the sports yesterday, and the programme was carried out in an expeditious manner, with the result that there was always something to engage attention, and a big hole was made in it by the time the train left for Invercargill. Won by two lengths. Rubin was favoutite. Trot Handicap of 6sovs. ; about 2 miles—l, Jones, 20 secs; 2, Kayline, 37 secs ; 3, Batchelor, 20se:s. Also ran : Dick, 30 secs; Jean, 37 secs; Toby, 37 secs; Highland Laddie, 37 secs. Won by a head; a poor third; the rest cf the field nowhere. Betting, 3to 1 against Jones. Otautau Cup, welter handicap of 10 sovs ; about one mile—l, Rubin, 9.9 ;2, Gentle, 9.7 ;3, Simon, 9.7. Gentle lay in the rear all through ; coming round the home bend she drew away, but failed to catch Rubin, who won by a length. Betting cn the winner, even money. Open Welter Handicap of 8 sovs ; about 1J mile—l, Doubtless, 10.9 ; 2, Loch S!oy, 10.5 ; 3, St Patrick, 10.7. Simon (8.5) also ran, but was never in it.
