Saturday, 21st April. The monthly meeting of the Council was attended by Councillors Walker (chairman), Chcwings, Newton, Fozde, Carmichael, Hare, Fraser, and Hirst. Agreements for expenditure of grant of £lOO for the Line of Hundreds road, and £250 for the Mararoa, bridge were received. —The chairman was authorised to sign agreements. _ lie grant of £OO for cutting sheep track Sunnyside to Woodlands, it was resolved ihrt the department be communicate ! with asking that the department consent to the expending of the £6O vote for the purpose of giving Sunnyside an outlet in accordance with the county engineer's recommendat ons. Mr Gilfeddrr, M.H.R., forwarded a letter from the Minuter of Lauds re subsidy for road io sawmill, Otautau, stating that

there is no vote for .the work, and itmust stand over for consideration with the estimates for next year. Mr S. Solomon,solicitor,wrote maktngclaim on behalf of J. Goldring for the sum of £lOOO as compensation for injuries received by him through his horse shying at some timber at roadside —TheCouncildecided not toacknowledge liability. , Cuthbert Cowan wrote that he had re- ( commended Mrs Chalmers to submit, the matter of compensation for land, required and severance to arbitration in the usua wav, and requested that proceedings be. delayed until a reply is received.-Resolved that the request be acceded to, n H Moffat, Eastern Bush, asked permis-. sion‘to remove some stone from the county road.—Left to engineer to deal with. , Ole Sorenson asked that the surfaceman be. allowed to make a footpath to his premises, —Left to member for the riding and the engineer. , . Thos. Scully asked for a refund of his deposit on contract on Howard’s road.— Received. .. . . ... Isabella Johnston called attention to the need for a channel on the south side of the bridge lately erected <ovor Opio creek.— Councillor Newton to attend to the matter. D. McPherson, sawmiller, was granted permission to construct a tramway along the side of the road leading from his sawmill to the town boundary. P. O’Meara called attention to culverts on Meara’s and Mausou’s road, which were, he said, too small. The engineer v(as of opinion that the culvert was large enough, if fall were brought up, and it was resolved that A. Manson be asked to bring up fall, as he promised to do. . . c „ An Edward Simpson sent in a claim for MU in connection with Falls Creek contract.— Received. Councillor Fraser presented a petition from Richard Bath and others praying that the grading of Bath road be deferred to next season. —Granted. Councillor Hare presented a petition from Wm. Haywood and others praying that the grant of £lOO be expended in opening tho road from the main road to the bush, block 22, Jacobs River Hundred.—Resolved that the prayer of the petition be not granted ; the money to be expended in accordance with the specification approved of by Chief Surveyor. Wm. Affleck reported re the Otautau grader, that a fair value would be 35 per cent, off cost, taking the machine in the present state.—Report adopted. The engineer asked for instruction as to what was to be done in the case of some contractors. —Resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the engineer to enforce conditions of contracts. On the motion of Councillor Chewings, the action of the engineer in making a bank to prevent the overflow from damaging the road at Centre Hill was approved of. It was resolved that £l2 Os 8d on contract 1048 be charged to Mararoa riding. Councillor Hirst moved and Councillor Walker seconded, that Mr Barnhill be empowered to expend £35 to provide posts for telephone communication from Castle Rock to Lumsden.
