Saturday, 21st April. The monthly meeting of the Council was attended by Councillors Walker (chairman), Chcwings, Newton, Fozde, Carmichael, Hare, Fraser, and Hirst. McPherson, sawmiller, was granted permission to construct a tramway along the side of the road leading from his sawmill to the town boundary. P. O’Meara called attention to culverts on Meara’s and Mausou’s road, which were, he said, too small. The engineer v(as of opinion that the culvert was large enough, if fall were brought up, and it was resolved that A. Manson be asked to bring up fall, as he promised to do. . . c „ An Edward Simpson sent in a claim for MU in connection with Falls Creek contract.— Received. Councillor Fraser presented a petition from Richard Bath and others praying that the grading of Bath road be deferred to next season. —Granted. Councillor Hare presented a petition from Wm. Haywood and others praying that the grant of £lOO be expended in opening tho road from the main road to the bush, block 22, Jacobs River Hundred.—Resolved that the prayer of the petition be not granted ; the money to be expended in accordance with the specification approved of by Chief Surveyor. Wm. Affleck reported re the Otautau grader, that a fair value would be 35 per cent, off cost, taking the machine in the present state.—Report adopted. The engineer asked for instruction as to what was to be done in the case of some contractors. —Resolved that the matter be left in the hands of the engineer to enforce conditions of contracts. On the motion of Councillor Chewings, the action of the engineer in making a bank to prevent the overflow from damaging the road at Centre Hill was approved of. It was resolved that £l2 Os 8d on contract 1048 be charged to Mararoa riding. Councillor Hirst moved and Councillor Walker seconded, that Mr Barnhill be empowered to expend £35 to provide posts for telephone communication from Castle Rock to Lumsden.
