Southland Implement and Engineering Company’s Social.

This annual event took place in Ashley’s Hall last night and proved in every respect the most successful the employee have had. The general arrangements were creditable to the committee of management, every detail being carried out to the utmost satisfaction of the 150 employes and friends present. Before partaking of the good things provided by the well-known caterers, Messrs D. Kingsland and Son, the manager of the works, Mr James Macalister, and the foreman, Mr James Dunbar, addressed those assembled. In the course of his remarks Mr Macalister said an annual social in connection with the works was a very desirable function, as it brought together under happy circumstances the employes of the company and also some of their friends, and misunder.-tandinge, if any, which might have arisen during the year were, at gatherings of the kind, generally settled, and fresh resolutions made to work harmoniously together. In looking back over the past twelve months he wan pleated to note that good progress had been made, and their competitors were shown that the company did not intend to take a back seat. This was particularly the case in regard to the principal farffi machine—the drill. In other implements and macfcineei they held their own, and everything manufactured by the firm was highly spoken of by argriculturists, not only throughout Southland but also in Canterbury and many parts of the North Island, a number of orders for implements having recently been spontaneously sent from across Cook Strait, and in every instance the utmost satisfaction was expressed by the purchaser. These were only a few of the facts which went to prove the position the company holds amongst the many implement manufacturers of the present time, and in this connection he thought the outlook a bright one. The company was now the sole agent in New* Zealand for Osborne and Co., one of the largest and most enterprising manufacturing firms in America. At the present time engineering work was plentiful, the implement business good, and everything spelt success. Although they had accomplished much, there was still plenty to do, and it would be to the mutual interest of all employed in the works if the firm had the full assistance and sympathy of every workman. The chief thing should be to turn out good work as a, good job always spoke for itself and was in itself a good advertisement. No mechanic should let a piece of work go out of his hands without being fully satisfied that it was done well, as this was the secret of success.

The repast having received ample justice, a small concert programme followed, excellent songs being sung by Miss Hishon, Miss Sangster and Mess s Filshell, Macalister and Searle. A reading by Mr J. Thompson was also a very acceptable item. Mrs Macalister, Mrs Blue, and Mr A. Sangster were the accompanists. The floor having been cleared for dancing several happy hours were spent in this form of amusement, Mrs Blue (piano) and Mr J, McGregor supplying the music. The social was brought to a close shortly bdloreS a.m.
