New Zealand. (Peb Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 26. Two young men named John Foster and John Reffe have been committed for trial on a charge of breaking and entering. There are now over a dozen young men waiting trial at next sessions. William Earl, a restaurant-keeper, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment for breaches of the Bankruptcy Act. WELLINGTON, April 26. The Agricultural Department continues to receive replies in favour of the Government undertaking dairy inspection, coupled, however, with some anxiety as to the cost. No proposal on this head will be made till all the replies are received. The strongest opposition to the project is from settlers in the Hutt Valley who deride any attempt to work up what they call a tuberculosis scare, though they admit that the disease is prevalent to some extent. Constable Victor Austin Hill, who was arrested the other day on a charge of having stolen £6 from the person of George Jones, was brought up at the Police Court to-day. Three witnesses for the prosecution gave evidence, and the case was adjourned till Monday. The evidence was to the effect that Hill was called to take a young man in charge who was behaving in such a manner as to lead to the belief that he was of unsound mind. He was afterwards committed to the asylum. It is averred that while the man was in his charge Hill took £6 out of his prisoner’s pocket-book and returned it to the unfortunate man’s sister minus the money. At a meeting of the Cricket Council F. C. Raphael, manager of the New Zealand team which visited Australia,- read a report of the tour, claiming that, considering the disadvantages the team was subject to in the way of travelling, playing on strange grounds, and the calibre of the players opposed to them, they acquitted themselves with great credit. The balance sheet showed a deficit of L 249, but this had been met by guarantees of different Associations. Mr Raphael said the immediate result of the tour would probably be the visit of a Victorian team next season, while the manager of the Australian eleven has notified his intention of including New Zealand in the forthcoming tour. PALMERSTON NORTH, April 26. Patrick O’Brien, employed on a contract in Kairanga, committed suicide during the night by cutting bis throat. Deceased had been drinking lately. DUNEDIN, April 26. John Wa'son, aged 50, and married, drowned himself in a well at Green Island at one o’clock on Tuesday morning. Deceased, who was a miner, met with an atcident in . Walton Park mine six months ago, and since then had been despondent. Oughton’s Janefield farm, North Taieri, has been offered to the Government. If purchased it is intended to cut it into three and five-acre sections. Broadbent, who was the victim of an accident at rhe railway s ation on Saturday night, died to-day after an operation for the amputation of a leg.
