Frozen Mutton in Manchester

—— Messrs John Reid and Sons, of Monte Christo have received the following letter from Mr Cameron, of the New Zealand Produce Stores Company, Manchester, who has for some time past been working hard to develop the sale of New Zealand mutton in that city. As the letter must be of interest to sheepgrowera we avail ourselves of Messrs Reid and Sons’ permission to reproduce it:— Manchester, May 19,1896. Dear Sirs,—Being anxious to secure the very finest grade of New Zealand mutton and lamb that we possibly can get, with the object of pushing the sale of New Zealand meat on its merits, and knowing that you breed and feed pure ‘Down’ sheep, we should bo glad to hear direct from you re those. We do not propose buying in the colony, but if you are shipping any lots Home for sale in London we should be pleased if you would notify us of any you are sending, giving us all particulars concerning them. Kindly let us know the agent to whom you are sending them, with the brand of the parcel and the number of sheep in each lot ; also say whether they are maiden ewos and wethers,or what they may be, with the weights of each brand. We should then bo in a position to ask the agent for this particular lot of sheep, and would bo able to offer him top market price for them. At present we cannot buy any particular ownoi’* lot,as wo only know the district sheep may come from.with de. Bcription of class and weight. Aa our experience in New Zealand causes us to know that various qualities are sent Home from the same district we would prefer to know tbe owner and feeder of the sheep. There are several lots of sheep in Southland that 1 we know of that ought to command quite as high a price as best ‘North Canterbury,’ but do not do so as they are sold as ‘South, lands,’ which brand does not command as high a figure. We trust that you will recognise tbe benefit to you of giving us tbe information we now ask, and reply to us at your earliest opportunity. In the event of your selling your sheep in the, colony we should be pleased if you asked tbe purchaser, if be is a shipper,to furnish us with full particulars of any lots sold by you which he may bo sending Home. When sending your sheep Home we would recommend you ti instruct tbe manager at freezing work* to be careful that a good bit of wool is left on the knuckle joints of the hind lege. Buyers like to see tbe dark wool on the leg.
