Saturday, July 13th. The monthly meeting of the Council watt attended by Councillors Carmichael (chairman), Chewings, Grant, Newton, Ellis, Hare, Hamilto >, and Hirst. The Mines Department intimated that the Minister had authorised a subsidy of £ for £ to the extent of L3O towards cutting a track at Longwood. The Chief Surveyor wrote re proposed extension of road to section 76, Wairaki, pointing out that before the Land Board would undertake to resume any part of section 78 it would require to be informed whether, in the event of resumption, Mr Clark is prepared to pay any claims which the present occupier may prefer in the shape of fencing, severance, &c., as the Department would not entertain any such claims. —Consideration deferred. John Stewart and others requested that Waterford street, Flints Bush, be opened for traffic.—Councillor Hamilton to inquire into the matter. L. McKenzie, I Taylor’s Creek, requested that the vote of L2O be expended in reducing the grade of the road known as McKenzie’s hill.—Received. Mr John Moffett, on behalf of Valentine and Richardson, requested permission to cut and use a main tail race from high water mark at Wakapatu beach across and along that portion of the county road which lies in the bed of the Ourawera stream.—Engineer to report. John Hunt complained of damage done by water through the cutting of an outfall.— Reoeived. Thomas Howard called attention to the damage done to the road in block 16, Longwood, through sledging.—Councillor Hirst stated that the road was brought into that condition by contractors for Government sleepets.—Resolved that the engineer take stringent measures to atop sledging on the roads.

Thomas Torbett asked to be recouped for loss sustained by his having met with an ac. cident while driving the grader.—Members for riding to inquire and report. He survey of new road to section 34, block 4, Longwood, it was resolved that the de partment be reminded of the survey aeeing a surveyor is ,in the locality. Councillor Grant presented a petition signed by 23 settlers in Wairio district requesting the Council to appoint a permanent ranger, as cattle and horses on roads had become a great nuisance.—Held over for a month. The collector repotted that 39 ratepayers had been summoned for rates ; that most of the claims had been settled ; that Ll44shad been collected; that the rates on the part of Merrivale purchased by the Government had not j'et been paid, and that a number of small amounts were still unpaid as well as rates on perpetual lease holdings. He asked for instiuctions in dealing with certain parties who had not paid amounts of judgment obtained. The clerk was instructed to take summary proceedings to recover all outstanding rates.—Councillor Ellis stated that the delay in paying the rates by the Government inflicted a hardship on the Council, as subsidy on the amount could not be included in the claim for subsidy forwarded to the Department.— Resolved that the clerk again make application for the rates, and also for the subsidy on the amounts. Accounts amounting to L 535 Ils Id were passed for payment. On the motion of Councillor Chewings it was resolved that B. Ekensteen’s offer to sell a road through his land at Centre Hill be. accepted and that the sum of LI 9 10s be voted for payment of timber to be cutin Burwood Bush. On the motion of Councillor Grant L3O was voted for cutting a track in the Longwood where most required to assist the mining industry; the engineer to prepare specifications for cutting the track ana the same to be forwarded to the Mines Department as required. It was resolved that the Crown’s attention be called to the gorse on streets in VVaimatuku township and on the Crown lands abutting on the streets. The engineer was instructed to give effect to his recommendations of works required at Dawson’s corner (cost not to exceed L 8), and also to ‘ arrange with Wm. Durie, Clifdcn, traffic to go through his land. An expenditure up to LIO was voted for protecting the banks at Double Cabbage Tree. lie bridges required at Otautau—plans were laid on the table, and, on the motion of the chairman, the engineer was instructed to get specifications ready for the largest bridge, next the Yellow Bluff road ; tenders to be called for the same as soon as convenient. On the motion of Councillor Grant it wag resolved to ask the Government to reduce the haulage rate on gravel for distances under 20 miles. The sum of L 5 was allocated to each riding to be expended either in getting bird poison prepared, or in purchasing prepared poison, as the member directs. The Council then adjourned.
