Cheviot Sheep

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Might we be allowed through the medium of your paper to contradict a statement appearing under the heading of “ Prime Scotch” in your issue of 27th June, and which has since been copied into the Otago Witness. The Cheviot sheep we imported in 1894. We lost a owe (Ist prize at the Royal Agricultural Society of England’s Show), on board ship coming out, and one of our rams died three months after his arrival on the station, having been heated ■ whilst in quarantine, but we fortunately have a ram by him. Our importation consisted of three gimmers and a Dinmont bred by Mr John Robsoo, Newton, Northumberland, and a Dinmont bred by Mr John Elliot, Hindhope, Jedburgh, N.B. Their performances at Home were Two gimmers and a Dinmont gained Ist prize at the Royal Agricultural Society’s Show ; a gimmer gained Ist prize at Newcastle Mospeth, Kelso and the Highland Society’s Show at Edinburgh : in fact she has been always first? whenever shown, and her dam having won 20 first prizes. The Dinmont bought from Mr Elliot was one of a pair which gained first prize at Jedburgh, the only time they were shown ; his neighbour being bought the same day as ours, to goto America. Our stud flock, although a modest one, secured for us two first prizes and two champions at. Invercargill in 1895, against allcomers.—We are,&c., Helder and Audry. Redcliff, Bth July.
