Political Notes and Comments.
[By Telegraph.] (prom our own correspondent.) Wellington, July 16. It is understood that the bank officials and directors, acting under legal advice, will refuse to answer any questions as to the position of individual accounts of past or present customers of the Bank of New Zealand and that future witnesses will take up a similar stand to that adopted by President Watson. Under such circumstances it will not be surprising to find several gents summoned to the bar of the House for contempt and possibly they may be ordered into the custody of the Sergeant-at-Arms for detention. Mr J. W. Kelly is asking the Minister of Justice if it is his intention to promote or in some manner recognise any or all the police officers connected with the Dean case. Speaking to-night on the Abolition of Capital Punishment Bill the Minister of Lands said that after Minnie Dean had been sentenced to death for the Winton babyfarming cases not a single request for her reprieve was received by the Executive; ib was in fact the desire of every true woman that the condemned prisoner should meet her doom. — • jys
