Co. The steamer Waihora arrived at}7.lsa.m. yesterday. She left Melbourne on the 7th inst. at 2.15 p.m, arrived at Hobart on the 9th nt 4.30 a.ra, and left there same day at 4.30 p.m, arriving as above. Had light variable winds with smooth seas till Monday, thence strong S.W. winds. The Waihora sailed for Dunedin Firth of Lome, Captain Jackson, has arrived at Dunedin from Glasgow. The s.s. Port Chalmers has arrived at Adelaide from London in a very battered condition, the bowsprit being carried away, and the figurehead and plating smashed, the latter from the stem for a length of 20 ,‘eet from the waterline upwards. The boats on that side were also smashed up. On July 27th, after rounding the Cape, she collided wi th an immense iceberg and a hundred tons of ice fell on the starboard side and almost capsized her. She leaked heavily and the situation was most critical. The boats were swung out ready for abandoning the vessel, but by keeping the pumps continuously going and patching, the crew managed to keep her afloat. They afterwards met with tempestuous weather, and had a most distressing experience. The ship was only saved by her collision bulkhead being intact. She has a large general cargo, including a big consignment of dynamite. It is believed that the ship is not seriously damaged. » • t » The 8.8.
