Southland Land Board

Tuesday, 13th August. The ordinary meeting of the Board was attended by Mosers Cowan (voted to the chair in the absence of the Chief Commissioner), Mclntyre, and Kinross, Mrs Murrell, for whom Mr W. B. Scandrett appeared, was granted a lease for 21 years of an accommodation house site at Manapouri. A communication was received from the head office, approving of the application of Eliza McDonald to purchase 50 acres pf unsurveyed land in Forest Hill Hundred, and, further, intimating that a portion of a section could not be surrendered, bub that a note of the matter had been made for embodiment in proposed amendments to the Land Act. The Board decided that they had no objection to section 5, block 10, Dipton, being set aside as a recreation reserve. ,

The Head Office wrote slating that village allotment holdings were limited to one acre each, and asking under what authority it was proposed by the Board to dispose of land at Wallacetown and Wallacetown Extension on lease.—lt was explained by the Chairman that the land was infested with the Californian thistle and that in consequence it was impossible to have it occupied under other conditions than those suggested until the nuisance was removed. —It was decided to reply stating that the Board had been prompted by expediency to take the proposed course.

Watson Bros’, offer of L2O for the sawmilling timber on village homestead allotment in section 14, block 8, Longwood was accepted. John Thornton asked that a reserve for gravel “be set aside for Wallace County in section 4, block 4, Aparima Hundred, and that the balance of the section be opened for selection. —It was decided to survey the gravel reserve, and to open the other portion of the section under the optional system of 12s 6d an acre ; The survey fee deposited to go to payment of rent if applicant is successful.

Alexander McDonald was granted remission of the second year’s payment of the penalty imposed by the Board for having illegally ploughed section 19, block 3, Mataura Hundred.

William Watson, holder of a grazing license over 200 acres to the east of Bahia asked permission to cut and burn off scrub and sow grass seed over the land. —Application sanctioned, subject to the consent of the N. Z. Pine Co., who hold timber rights on the land.

Elizabeth McDonald applied for the lease of three or five acres at the western end of Kingston township for grazing purposes.— Banger to report and assess rental. Joseph Crosbie’s application for a lease for three, four, or five years of section 5, block 8, Centre Hill district, was held over. Thomas Quested offered to pay one of the instalments due on his forfeited section at Morley Village.—To be informed that the offer was too late.

It was decided that if Donald Sinclair made the necessary payment in connection with forfeited section 158, Wairio, within one month, the Board would recommend that the forfeiture be rescinded.

B. and F. Wallis having given up 'possession of section 15, block 3,East Gore, it was decided to re-offer the land, and a similar course was taken regarding section 3, block 9, Waikaka. Mr C. Fletcher, on behalf of Henry Sydney Jones, asked to transfer part of section 1, of 213, Hokonui Distsict.—Declined, the Board having no power. Cyrus and Emma Smith were granted permission to exchange their perpetual lease sections, 57 to 59, Waiau, for leases in perpetuity. Transfers were granted:—Section 34,b10ck 14, Chatton, Hugh Rinkin to John Marr; section 41, block 4, Mabel, Richard Berry to Daniel Ogilvie ; sections 15 and 16,block 2, Wendonside, Alexander Sutherland to Robert Sutherland ; section 298, Forest Hill Hundred, D. C. Gorman to Christopher and John Murchison.

Applications to complete purchase were granted : —Alexander Neiderer, sections 14 16, 32b, 33 and 34, block 7, Oteramika ; Thomas Kerr Waddell, section 4, block 14, Centre Hill; James Wardrop, section 578, Hokonui; George Lynch, section 627, Hokonui; Richard Munro, section 7, block 13, Oteramika Hundred; George Anderson, section 108, block 8, Invercargill Hundred; Hugh Knox, section 165, Wairio. David Bonthron applied on behalf of Charles Bonthron, J essie Brungot and Jas. Adamson, holders of sections 12 and 13,' block 5, Longwood, that the moneys ac•ruing from thirds in their sections should be expended by Wallace County Council on •uch roads as would make the land accessible from Orepuki, the amount of thirds being about L 99 14s.— Referred to the County Council. Joseph Preston was granted a license to cut fencing timber on section 16, block 3, Toi Tois.

The followingapplications were granted :— Unsurveyed rural land : Eliza McDonald, 25 acres at Forest Hill Hundred. Occupation with rightto purchase: Jamesßrookland, section 140, block 1, Paterson ; Herbert Mason, eection 95, block 22, Invercargill Hundred. Lease in perpetuity: Mary Cursen, section 10, block 7, Longwood. Village Homestead Allotments : Andrew Strachan, section 775, Hokonui; James Scott, junr., section 3, block 7, Holmesdale Valley. The Board then adjourned.
