The Chinese Riots

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) London, Aug. 8. Yesterday a mob attacked the British and American mission house at Latshan near Canton. The hospital was demolished and some of the inmates fled. A Chinese gunboat has been despatched to the scene. The Vegetarians,who number about 12,000, are well armed and they state that they intend to destroy the whole of the mission houses in the Tuang Lang province and eject the missionaries. The Pall Mall Gazette states that an outbreak against Chiistims has -occurred at Chung Chow, Hupeh, Tuiping, and Aniu. Two hundred Sikh troops accompany Mr R. \V. Mansfield, British Consul at Wenchow, to Kucheng. A public meeting was held at Hong Kong, which denounced the connivance of the-officials, and complained of the inadequate means taken by the British Government to protect their subjects. They also demanded that pressure should be brought t<s bear on China by the United States Consul. Reports from Foochow state that the names of tho leaders of the massacre have been obtained. Aug. 9 Received 10th, 1 a.m. .Miss Mabel Hartford, an American missionary, states that the mob at Kucheng attacked the mission station at 7 o’clock in the morning. She was nearly speared but got off with a severe beating. Miss Topsy Saunders escaped to Dr Steward’s house, but was killed outside. Miss Gordon’s head was almost severed from her body.
