Last year Judge W indeyer granted Thomas* Richard] Butler a decree nisi for divorce from” his] wife on tho ground of adultery with George Williams, whose real name has since been ascertained to bo Charles Davis. Subsequent revelations led the Crown to prefer against Butler,'Davis, and a woman named Peake a of conspiracy to falsely accuse Mrs Butler. Evidence was submitted to piove that Davis and Peake had been paid by Butler to lead his wife astray in order that tho latter might obtain a divorce. All three accused were found guilty, the jury adding a rider that Mrs Butler had not committed the offence forwhich the divorce was granted. Butler and Davis were sentenced to seven, and Peake to four years’ imprisonment. Rofe, who acted as solicitor for Butler in the divorce proceedings, has also been arrested on a charge of conspiracy. .
