Wellington, Aug. 3 It is proposed under the Mining Companies Bill to prevent sharebrokers . from holding mining shares not acquired before she new Act comes into operation. The Government have appointed Judge Ward President of the South Island Railway Appeal Board and Mr J. C. Martin, S.M., at Wellington, President of the North Island Board.

When the Rating on Unimproved Value Bill is in committee Mr Ward will move that the following new clause may be inserted :— In all cases where there is more than one occupier of a building and it is necessary to apportion the amount of rates payable, by each occupier, the same shall be determined as follows, that is to say (1) the ratable -value of the land and also the annual letting value of the whole building with the. land occupied thereby shall be first determined ; (2) next the annual letting value of each portion of the building which is separately occupied shall be determined, and (3) then the portion of the ratable value upon which each occupier shall be rated shall be the sum which bears the same • proportion to the ratable value of the land as the annual letting value of the portion of the building so separately occupied bears to the annual letting value of the whole building and land. Mr Houston is to move in Committee on the Animals Protection Act Amendment Bill that notwithstanding anything contained in “The Animals Protection Act, 1880,” native pigeons shall not be taken or killed in any district during the year 1896, nor, thereafter, during every sixth year.
