Police Court.
Monday, 10th December. (Before C. E. Rawson, Esq., S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A woman charged with having been drunk was convicted and discharged. Another first offender, a man, was similarly dealt with. STONE-THROWING. Three boys pleaded guilty to a charge of having thrown stones on the railway line. Sergeant Macdonell said the boys might have been charged with the more serious offence of damaging railway property. They had been throwing stones as hard as they possibly could at a notice-board on the line, and afterwards went away and threw stones at a boat-shed. They were bld enough to know better. —His Worship said their admission of the offence was, perhaps, some evidence of repentance. They would be fined 2s with costs 3s 8d each, but if they came before the court again they would be severely dealt with. ASSAULT. Alice Gunn v. Sarah Eliza Barlow.-—This was an action in which the defendant was charged with having assaulted the complainant by striking her on the face with her hand.—Mr Brodrick for the plaintiff and Mr Henderson for the defendant.—The parties to the action are neighbours in Yarrow street, and it appeared that some altercatii n took place bi tween them owing to Mrs Barlow’s boy having, it was alleged, thrown stones ou the verandah and broken a window of Mrs Gunn’s house. Mrs Barlow stated that Mrs Gunn had beaten the boy, and that when she (Mrs Barlow) went to remonstrate Mrs Gunn seize 1 her by the wrists, whereupon she wrenched her hands
free and lightly slapped Mrs Gunn’s face. Mrs Gunn denied having taken hold of the defendant by the wrists, and said that the slap she got was nob a light one. After hearing the evidence his . Worship imposed a fine of 2s, with costa LI Bs. • STEALING FLOWERS. A man named, dames Scott, convicted pf ■ stealing roses, was discharged on his promising .to leave the town and behave better for the future. . ~ •
