AUCKLAND, Dec. 10. A fire broke out at 3.30 this morning in the premises in Queen street occupied by the local agents of Wriggles worth ana Binns, photographers. The building, which is of brick, was gutted. The origin of the fire is unknown. The photographic stock was insured for L3OO in the Norwich Union offioe; the building, owned by W. Eastdown, was insured for LlOOO in the Commercial Union. The premises of Miss West, milliner, adjoining, were damaged. They were insured for LlOO in the Royal office. The total damage is estimated at LlOOO.

WELLINGTON, Dec. 10. Mr H. R. Glegg for many years manager of the Wellington branch of the National Bank, who is at present on leave in Europe, will not return to the colony and has retired from the service of the bank.

It is understood that the negotiations for the appointment of Mr J. P. Maxwell G.E. as a commissioner to report on the Victorian railways have been broken off.

The Papanui shooting case came before the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Charles Henry W agstaff was committed for trial on a charge of unlawfully wounding Charles Langdon, and Langdon was committed on a charge of attempting to commit burglary at Wagstaffs house. Bail was allowed each of the accused.

The Cathedral spire was injured by the recent earthquake. The damage, which is not serious and can easily be remedied, consists of cracks in the part thrown down by the heavy earthquake a few years ago and since restored in firebrick.
