The Friendly Societies Gala
There was an extremely gratifying attendance at the annual picnic arranged by the Friendly Societies of Invercargill, which on this occasion took place at Mokotua yesterday. The excursionists, who, with children, must have numbered nearly 2000, were conveyed by a train composed of 41 carriages drawn by two engines. The weather in the early morning was extremely wet, but fortunately cleared up a couple of hours before the time for the departure of the train and the remainder of the day was all that could be desired, the rays of the sun being tempered by a cool breeze. The rendezvous chosen is a model place for such festivities —a large open space high and dry in the great bight of Seaward Bush. The forest affords nice shelter and supplies the kindling wood necessary “ to boil the William.” These articles of domestic use were very soon in full swing after the arrival of the train. The inner man being satisfied and gratified games of all sorts were indulged in by youngsters and oldsters. There were about twenty events on the programme, but these were considerably supplemented, a bicycle race being one of the additions. The winner was Mr Masters, who was carried shoulder high aud presented with a trophy in the shape of a handsome doll. Competition was decidedly keen in all the events, accounted for, no doubt, by the large number of handsome prizes provided. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the City Guards Ban I adding their quota by playing lively selections. The committee of management, including the indefatigable and courteous secretary, Mr George Brown, worked strenuously to make things pass off pleasantly, and they are to be congratulated on the success attained.
