(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). Our Athletic Society held its annual meeting lately and resolved to hold sports this year. Mr Andrews was elected chairman and Mr J. G. Sutherland treasurer and secretary. The annual concert and ball in connection therewith took place on Friday last, when a very good audience assembled to listen to little singing and a farce entitled the “Wonderful Phonograph,” the leading parts in which were taken by Messrs Ramage and Westfield, the former playing remarkably well and creating roars of laughter, which ought to do the people of this district Bore good than several doses of physio. The singing and instrumentation was,, on the whole, good, especially considering the short time given for preparation, and the gentlemen deserve great credit for their services. The performers were Messrs A. Jackson, C. Westfield, G. Tinker, T. Hollows, A. Hunter, J. Beadle, W. Hollows, and J. S. Andrews. The ball was well patronised, dancing being continued, as usual, till daylight to music supplied by Messrs Andrews (piano), T. Hollows (piccolo) and Kidd (violin); Mr T. Berry ably acting as M.C. Mr J. G. Sutherland was a very successful chairman, and I am sure all went home well pleased. If they didn’t they ought to. The welcome rain has, of course, done an immense lot of good, entirely changing the face of nature. Everything looks as fresh and green as can be. A great want in an isolated spot like this is a Justice of the Peace. We are miles away from the nearest, and there ought to be one here. There are men here as capable as, and perhaps more so, than some who have been appointed elsewhere, and the services of such an official are often wanted to sign documents required by law. Our member should think over this matter and try what he can do, if he has not got into the “ black books.” sth Nov.
