Invercargill Athenaeum.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—A report in yours of 3rd states in respect of the above building !hab the committee » decided to have the chess and draughts room coloured and painted.” As an old member lam not aware of any room in the Athenaeum building having been dedicated as a chess anil draughts room,” and therefore protest against an utterance which by implication may be assumed to indicate that a particular club or body has a vested interest in the room referred to. It has been suggested that a small coterie desires the exclusive occupancy of the " smoking room, and pursuant thereto treats members not interested in chess or draughts as intruders. The’ subscription of the few devotees of chess is a paltry return for the use of the smoking room” and the cost of gas and. firing if it is to be understood to carry with it the exclusion of ordinary members not chess players. Perhaps, however, your report is in error by the substitution of the words <* chess and draughts ” for the word smoking.”—l am, &c., Old Member.
